On September 30, 2009, a violent earthquake, magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale, devastated the Indonesian island of Sumatra and severely damaged homes and water infrastructure.

To support an Action contre la Faim emergency team, the Foundation assigned Veoliaforce volunteers to Padang (capital of the province of Western Sumatra, population 800,000) to help set up temporary distribution points and to provide nearly 30,000 disaster victims with access to drinking water.In a second phase, their expertise helped evaluate the equipment needed to restart one of the water production plants of the city of Padang, supplying some 300,000 people.
